ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Joint USI-MEA Centenary Commemoration project highlights the oft-forgotten role of India in the First World War and commemorates those soldiers who served during the War. The project is aimed at exploring India’s engagement in the war from a variety of perspectives. In revisiting ideas and interpretations regarding India’s involvement, we examine dimensions as diverse as strategy and tactics, race and gender, filmography, visual representation, and the intercultural aspects of the conflict. Our planned commemorative activities are spread across a period of four years and range from international conferences to the launch of publications and documentaries.

Memory is central to the project and we invite people to contribute photographs, anecdotes, and souvenirs of those Indians who were involved in India’s war effort in one way or another.

The project is functioning under the direction of a joint United Service Institution (USI) - Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Steering Committee comprising Additional Secretary (Political), Joint Secretary (CT, PP & R), Director (USI), and Secretary (USI - Centre for Armed Forces Historical Research).
